Communication
In general, teaching requires excellent communication skills, and given the ephemeral nature of music, these skills are put to the test in ways that are difficult to anticipate. Some students learn best visually, some aurally, some verbally. This is why being able to communicate ideas and concepts in many different ways is crucial.
In March of 2020, communication with students became ever more important. While many schools may have closed due to quarantine, classes kept moving right along albeit in a different sort of classroom. For my ear training courses, I moved my students to Twitch and streamed class from my home office. I chose Twitch because the audio quality was much better than Zoom or other alternatives. As in the screenshot below, the class could still reply in text, which was good enough. There was a 3-5 second delay, but this was overcome with a little patience on part of myself and my students. In the end it was a fun semester.
